How reliable is the COVID-19 rapid test? Experts explain the accuracy and precision of results

It’s not as sensitive as other coronavirus tests.

You've probably been hearing a lot about rapid COVID-19 testing lately. Some schools and workplaces are using rapid tests to monitor local transmission rates. Celebs like the kardashians have even made headlines for hiring concierge testing services to check guests before events like kendall jenner's birthday party. And rapid COVID-19 testing is only going to become more widespread. In november, the U.S. Food and drug administration (FDA) approved the first rapid COVID-19 test for at-home use.

But let's back up a second: A rapid test manufactured by abbott laboratories was given emergency use authorization by the FDA in august 2020. Now, 50 million of these tests are being produced and distributed nationwide every month.

Here's how the abbott test works: a nasal swab sample of mucus is twirled onto a sample card treated with a testing reagent. The card reacts to the sample, and if COVID antigens are detected, two lines will appear within 15 minutes.

But how accurate are these tests, and does a negative result mean that you're COVID-free? "if a person has symptoms, [the tests] are reasonably accurate at diagnosing cases. It’s different when looking at it is a screening test," says amesh adalja, MD, senior scholar at the johns hopkins center for health security. That's because if a person is asymptomatic, they might not have high enough levels of virus in their mucus to test positive.

Experts warn that you shouldn't treat rapid testing as a free pass to attend a party or wedding. "if people think they can test and have a 'normal' holiday, we are going to have big increases in cases and hospitalizations and deaths as a result," says susan butler-wu, phd, associate professor of clinical pathology at the keck school of medicine at the university of southern california.

With rates of coronavirus on the rise in the united states, here's everything you need to know about the rapid test.

What is a rapid COVID-19 test?

Generally, there are two common types of tests used to diagnose an active COVID-19 infection: polymerase chain reaction (PCR) tests, which look for traces of the SARS-cov-2 virus's genetic material in a patient's mucus, and antigen tests, which detect the presence of a specific protein on the surface of the SARS-cov-2 virus. (this protein is called an antigen.) right now, most PCR tests and all antigen tests rely on nasal swabs, and you should ask your health care provider which test you're receiving if you're curious.

How Reliable Is The COVID-19 Rapid Test? Experts Explain The Accuracy And Precision Of Results, are they reliable.

At the beginning of the pandemic, the only test available was a PCR test, which with an accuracy rate of 63 to 98 percent is still considered the "gold standard" of COVID testing. In a PCR test, a sample of mucus from your nose or throat is taken using a swab, and shipped to a lab for processing using chemical reagents. In some states, COVID diagnosis can take more than a week using lab-based PCR tests. Some sites may take a saliva sample instead of a mucus sample, per the FDA.

As a result of chemical reagent shortages and processing delays, rapid tests were developed last spring. Rapid tests can take as little as 15 minutes, and the majority are antigen tests. (although the white house and some other locations have a PCR version—the abbott idnow—which expedites PCR analysis inside a machine.)

The third type of COVID test, an antibody test, looks for signs that a patient has already had the infection. It's a finger prick or blood test. Antibody tests are not used to diagnose an active infection. And if you find out that you have antibodies, that doesn't mean you get a free pass to stop wearing masks or social distance. "you should not assume that because you have antibodies that means you're immune and you don't have to worry about catching it or spreading it again," says butler-wu.

Can I do a rapid COVID test at home?

The just-approved lucira COVID-19 all-in-one test kit will be widely available by prescription in early spring 2021, according to manufacturers. The single-use test will cost around $50 and takes about 30 minutes from start to finish. It has an accuracy rate of between 94.1% to 98%, according to lucira.

How Reliable Is The COVID-19 Rapid Test? Experts Explain The Accuracy And Precision Of Results, are they reliable.

Here's how it works: you swab your nose, and then swirl the sample into a vial of solution. Then, you plug the vial into a small battery-operated device. The machine analyzes the sample with a method called a loop-mediated isothermal amplification reaction (LAMP). Similar to PCR tests, LAMP duplicates the virus’s genetic material until it reaches detectable levels. When the analysis is complete, a light will tell you whether you're positive or negative.

What are the benefits of a rapid COVID test?

"number one, they're rapid. Number two is they don't require a sophisticated laboratory to process," says dr. Adalja. "number three is they don't require some of those chemical reagents that are scarce right now. Number four is they're cheaper."

Rapid testing also decentralizes testing and makes it more widely available in areas where traditional PCR tests are scarce.

What are the downsides of a rapid test?

Rapid antigen tests may be more likely to result in a false negative or false positive, experts say. Antigen tests, which now comprise most of the rapid testing options on the market, are less sensitive because they look for antigen proteins on the surface of the virus instead of traces of the virus's RNA. "antigens tests are never going to be comparable to PCR tests in terms of sensitivity," dr. Adalja says. "if you do an antigen test, you may get a false positive like governor dewine in ohio did, or you may get a false negative."

How Reliable Is The COVID-19 Rapid Test? Experts Explain The Accuracy And Precision Of Results, are they reliable.

The abbott rapid antigen test authorized in august reports a 97.1 percent sensitivity rate, which is very promising. Previously, antigen tests were thought to be 50 to 90 percent accurate, meaning one in two people could get a false result. That said, emergency-use authorization means that "the usual rigorous testing and vetting has not happened, and accuracy results have not been widely published," harvard health publishing cautions of all COVID tests.

If someone says their rapid COVID test came back negative, does that mean they're infection-free?

"testing is something you can do to decrease your risk, but it's not ironclad," dr. Adalja says.

Testing is one of three ways (along with masks and social distancing) to reduce the spread of COVID. Testing, masks, and social distancing are most effective when used together.

"the fact that testing decreases risk is a good thing, but you have to remember it can't be used alone and you shouldn't get a false sense of security from it," dr. Adalja says.

It's also important to remember that a COVID test is a snapshot of one moment in time. "it decreases the uncertainty but it's not going to eliminate it because you know that there's an incubation period," dr. Adalja says.

He cautions that since the test is only looking at a sample during one moment in time, it's entirely possible for someone to be exposed to the SARS-cov-2 virus after the test, or be tested during the virus's incubation period before it would produce a positive result.

If I get a COVID test, can I attend an event like a wedding or a party?

Both dr. Adalja and butler-wu caution that gatherings will need to look different to keep COVID transmission under control. "it is not safe to all be in a room together with the windows closed, even with masks on," butler-wu says.

Since testing isn't an effective way to contain the spread of COVID without masks and social distancing, it would be wise to change social plans accordingly, like going on a hike with friends, or sitting around a fire or outdoor heater after dinner. "you still want to try to do the activity outdoors, try to do some social distancing, try to have people wearing face coverings where applicable," dr. Adalja says. Eating indoors around a dinner table is not recommended unless everyone present is part of the same quarantine pod.

Butler-wu stresses the importance of taking precautions, because researchers still don't know how COVID-19 affects patients months or years down the line, and SARS-cov-2 acts differently than similar coronaviruses. "testing is not a passport to acting like the kardashians on the island. It's not," she says. "using a negative test to decide that 'none of us are going to wear a mask' is a dangerous thing. No age group is immune from the potential consequences of this virus."

How long do CVT transmissions last?

How Reliable Is The COVID-19 Rapid Test? Experts Explain The Accuracy And Precision Of Results, are they reliable.

What is a CVT transmission?

A CVT (continuously variable transmission) is a type of automatic transmission that has an indefinite number of gear ratios. While a conventional automatic has a fixed number of gears (4 gears for a four speed, 6 gears for a six speed, etc), a CVT can form any number and combination of gears based on its mechanical limits and the transmission control unit’s programming.

Though many cvts are programmed to shift like a conventional automatic, they actually don’t need to “shift” at all. The process of changing ratios is seamless and can be done under engine load. This gives the car a very smooth power delivery, almost like an electric vehicle.

The reason some cvts appear to shift is because many consumers don’t like the way a CVT feels or sounds. Cvts have the ability to hold the engine at its most efficient RPM for maximum torque, power, or fuel economy, depending on what is requested by the driver.

When the transmission does this, the engine will drone at a constant RPM even as speed increases. This “rubber band” effect reminds some people of a motorboat or a snow machine.

If you’re used to a manual transmission, a CVT may feel like a slipping clutch when you first hit the gas. This is especially true at full throttle. When you floor it, engine speed will jump up rapidly to about 5,000 RPM and stay there. This is normal operation for many cvts and likely not a cause for concern.

How Reliable Is The COVID-19 Rapid Test? Experts Explain The Accuracy And Precision Of Results, are they reliable.

How does a CVT work?

There are several different types of cvts. One of the most common designs uses a pair of conical pulleys and a belt or chain between them. As each pair of cones moves closer together or farther apart, the “gear” of that pulley changes.

In addition to the variable diameter pulley system used by other manufacturers, nissan also manufactures a toroidal CVT. This design is better for high torque applications, such as rear wheel drive sports cars.

A toroidal CVT works by moving a pair of rollers that transmit torque between two disks. As the rollers rotate, they spin each conical disk at different speeds.

Toyota produces a special CVT that has a physical first gear like a conventional automatic, then transitions seamlessly to a CVT after one upshift. This transmission is used on the corolla hatchback.

There are a couple other types of cvts such as hydrostatic and magnetic (that use fluids and magnets to transfer torque respectively), but these are less common in cars and trucks.

Here’s a good video showing how a CVT works:

How long do CVT transmissions last?

The longevity of a CVT is dependent on many factors. Cvts have been around for a while, but only recently have they become affordable and reliable. A CVT in a late model vehicle should easily surpass 100,000 miles with regular maintenance but older cvts may not last as long.

Some auto manufacturers no longer produce a conventional automatic transmission and have invested significant resources into CVT technology. Over the past few years, CVT quality has stabilized quite a bit, allowing most manufacturers to produce them confidently without large scale reliability issues.

A good CVT will last a very long time when taken care of. Regular maintenance should be performed according to the owner’s manual.

Are CVT transmissions reliable?

How Reliable Is The COVID-19 Rapid Test? Experts Explain The Accuracy And Precision Of Results, are they reliable.

While data on failure rates isn’t readily available in the automotive industry, it’s possible to do some research on any vehicle you’re interested in buying to see what technical service bulletins (tsbs) and recalls have been posted.

This should give you an idea if you should expect any major problems. Customer complaints are also a good anecdotal indicator.

That said, most cvts produced by major automakers in the last 5 years or so are generally pretty reliable and should easily last 100,000 miles. After that, it varies depending on owner maintenance and build quality.

Most vehicles that use a CVT come from japanese manufacturers: toyota, honda, subaru, nissan, and mitsubishi. Toyota and honda still offer a 6-speed automatic, but subaru and nissan have stopped using them (save for the subaru BRZ, which was co-developed by toyota).

Mazda continues to use conventional automatics and manual transmissions almost exclusively.

Toyota

Toyota is a large company that has perfected lean manufacturing. Their cvts are some of the most reliable on the market.

Honda

Honda is also known for its reliability and has done an outstanding job with the design of their CVT. A 10th generation honda civic equipped with the 1.8L turbocharged engine and CVT has more power than you would expect. It accelerates quite a lot like an electric vehicle.

Subaru

The subaru CVT does an excellent job of squeezing every last mile out of a tank of gas, which is important to keep the brand competitive in a market controlled by emissions numbers.

Many people like to use subarus off road. Be aware that a CVT often cannot hold as much torque as a conventional automatic or manual transmission, and may be prone to overheating if used outside the parameters it was designed for.

Nissan

Nissan has had many reliability issues with their economy car cvts in the past, so do some research before buying a used automatic nissan. Their CVT reliability has increased as time has progressed and they’ve had a chance to iterate on their design.

Failure at 80,000 miles on older units is not uncommon with nissan cvts.

Mitsubishi

Mitsubishi has been struggling over the past decade but continues to produce some of the least expensive cars on the market. If you’re interested in purchasing a mitsubishi, it may be wise to do a little research first on their cvts.

Do cvts need a transmission flush?

Most owner’s manuals do not specify a CVT transmission flush interval, stating that the continuously variable transmission fluid (CVTF) will last the lifetime of the vehicle.

You will find, however, that a vehicle with many miles may develop a leak in the transmission fluid, or the fluid may become burnt or contaminated and require changing.

Exercise common sense when deciding whether to flush the transmission or perform any other potential maintenance item. If your fluid looks or smells old, has particles in it, or you just have high mileage on the vehicle, consider flushing the transmission fluid.

The least reliable french door refrigerators

That fridge with the side-by-side doors and bottom freezer may look great, but is it? Refrigerators with french doors from GE appliances ranked last in customer satisfaction, according to J.D. Power’s 2018 kitchen & laundry appliance satisfaction study. And an important FYI: refrigerators are more likely to break down in the summer than in more temperate times of the year. That’s according to the first U.S. Appliance repair affordability, reliability and seasonality report from the san francisco–based home-maintenance company puls, which surveyed the company’s national network of appliance-repair technicians. To keep things running smoothly, make sure you’re not unintentionally shortening the life of your refrigerator.

The most reliable french door refrigerators

So, which brands should you check out instead? Whirlpool is the top choice for a reliable french door refrigerator brand, according to the J.D. Power’s report. Kitchenaid and samsung follow in second and third place, respectively. Another notable finding: the puls report also named whirlpool as the overall most reliable home-appliance brand. So you may want to put whirlpool on your shortlist not just for fridges but also for other home items.

The least reliable side-by-side refrigerators

In the side-by-side refrigerator category, customers in the J.D. Power survey were most dissatisfied with maytag, which ranked the lowest. According to puls’ experts, the most common problems with refrigerators tend to be cooling issues, followed by broken ice-makers and leaks. This is not only annoying, of course, but also potentially expensive. You’ll end up shelling out up to $500 for repairs—or $1,000 or more for a new fridge. And that doesn’t even take into account all of the potential money you can lose when all your food goes bad.

The most reliable side-by-side refrigerators

Several brands performed well in this category in both the J.D. Power survey and the puls report. Kenmore ranked number one in customer satisfaction, according to J.D. Power, while whirlpool was the brand of choice among the appliance-repair technicians who were tapped for the puls report. When something’s broken, you don’t always need to call in a professional. Here’s how to fix 10 everyday appliances for free.

The least reliable dishwashers

Different brands have different appliance strengths, and of course, this can change from year to year. When it comes to dishwashers, J.D. Power’s respondents were dissatisfied with frigidaire’s dishwashers. And in case you were wondering, a few jaded customers aren’t tipping the scales. The study was based on thousands of product evaluations provided by customers who purchased appliances in the last 12 months.

The most reliable dishwashers

When your dishwasher breaks, you realize just how much you need it and just how much time and energy it saves you every day. If you need a new one, both the puls report and the most recent consumer reports member survey on dishwashers put bosch in the number one slot for consumer reliability. Make sure you’re not doing any of these 21 things that shorten the life of your dishwasher.

The least reliable washing machines

Despite the fancy-sounding brand name, kenmore elite actually performs poorly and ranks last in customer satisfaction for front-loading washing-machine brands in J.D. Power’s survey. Surprisingly, it’s even behind the more budget-minded kenmore range in these rankings. And when it comes to top-loading washers, a different brand takes those dubious last-place honors: frigidaire. According to puls’ technicians, the most common problem with washing machines (as well as dishwashers) is that they don’t drain properly.

The most reliable washing machines

The best way to get a good product: ask for a recommendation from a professional. When it comes to washing machines, puls’ technicians overwhelmingly called out whirlpool as the brand they recommend to customers. After whirlpool, LG and samsung came in second and third place, respectively. To help your washing machines function better and last longer, these are the ingredients you should be putting in them.

The least reliable dryers

Customers weren’t thrilled with amana dryers, according to J.D. Power’s study. They ranked the brand last in customer satisfaction. GE didn’t fare much better in this category. According to puls, the likeliest issue with this appliance is that it’s not heating and drying clothes properly. Of course, that kind of defeats the purpose of having a dryer. To make sure you’re not accidentally damaging your machine, know the one type of dryer sheets you really should be using.

The most reliable dryers

A good dryer not only gets your clothes dry, but it can also keep your utility bills down. And on the flip side, those bills can go way up if you have to put your clothes through multiple cycles to get them dry. Whirlpool, LG, maytag, and samsung took top honors in the puls report’s list of reliable dryers. And did you know that drying clothes isn’t a dryer’s only function? Check out these things you never knew your dryer could do.

The least reliable countertop microwaves

Which microwave brands do shoppers consistently prefer? Consumer reports surveyed people who had experience with more than 29,000 countertop models over the past year, and the results were largely negative when it came to whirlpool. In fact, whirlpool’s countertop microwaves performed so poorly in the survey that the publication no longer recommends them in this category at all. But whirlpool makes a serious comeback with over-the-range microwaves. The brand actually earned the two top spots in that category from consumer reports.

The most reliable countertop microwaves

Avanti and farberware were the two best-performing brands in the same consumer reports survey, earning a coveted “excellent” rating for reliability from respondents. Black + decker, LG, and samsung landed one category below avanti and farberware, receiving a “very good” designation. If you’re thinking of making a big purchase, try to be strategic: these the best times to buy household appliances.

The least reliable stovetops

Repairing a stove can cost you a whopping $1,000, plus $200 or more in additional fees, according to the puls report. The appliance-repair technicians who weighed in rated LG the least reliable brand in this category. Samsung came in second-to-last place. Wondering how long a stove should last you? The experts say about 12 years.

The most reliable stovetops

Puls’ technicians gave GE top honors, naming their stovetops (and ranges) as the most reliable. This is actually the only time that the brand appears as a winner or medalist in the report’s reliability category. Whirlpool isn’t far behind, coming in second place, and kitchenaid was awarded third place.

The least reliable ranges

The average repair cost of a range is $264, according to the puls report. And regardless of cost, you want to choose the brand that has the least chance of breaking down so you don’t have to deal with the hassle. In this category, amana ranks last in customer satisfaction among J.D. Power’s respondents who purchased a freestanding range in the past year.

The most reliable ranges

Puls’ technicians recommend GE as their top choice for reliable ranges. Whirlpool was hot on GE’s heels in second place, followed by kitchenaid, which earned third-place honors. The technicians add that it’s essential to get a good-quality, reliable range for both safety and cooking consistency. While they based their picks on the reliability of these GE products, they also love that the company offers great options at a variety of price points. Wondering if you should fix something or ditch it? These are the appliances that are cheaper to replace than to fix.

COVID-19 antibody tests: how reliable are they?

With stay-at-home orders expiring around the world, many hope that COVID-19 antibody testing will help businesses and institutions reopen safely. Determining whether people have been infected with SARS-cov-2 is a key tool in responding to the pandemic, but it is not a magic bullet. A feature article in chemical & engineering news, the weekly newsmagazine of the american chemical society, details the steps manufacturers are taking to ensure antibody tests are accurate and available.

The U.S. Food and drug administration has issued several emergency use authorizations to companies for antibody tests, allowing them to be used during the pandemic. These blood-based tests measure the presence or absence of antibodies that the body produces when fighting infection with SARS-cov-2, and the tests are distinct from the nasal swabs that detect current infection. After a person recovers from COVID-19, antibodies are thought to remain in their system for weeks, writes senior editor megha satyanarayana. Tests vary in their mechanisms for detecting antibodies, but all separate antibody-containing plasma from red blood cells and then determine whether the antibodies "stick" to specific COVID-19 proteins. That binding action is detected with fluorescent or other readout methods.

Manufacturers have been working around the clock to produce tests that are fast, automated and can be used with equipment that hospitals and clinical labs already have. While some of the early tests have had questionable accuracy, much progress has been made in recent months, and some manufacturers are reporting sensitivities and specificities near 100%. More reliable tests mean a better understanding of community spread, but they cannot provide information about the possibility of reinfection, a key question for those looking for guidance on reopening. However, experts believe that humans can produce large amounts of SARS-cov-2 antibodies, and the virus is slow to mutate, which bodes well for long-term protection. While companies are working to maximize their production, experts caution that requiring proof of immunity could pose an ethical dilemma that might lead to further disenfranchisement of an already stressed workforce.

Are jeeps actually reliable?

How Reliable Is The COVID-19 Rapid Test? Experts Explain The Accuracy And Precision Of Results, are they reliable.

So you are interested in buying a jeep. Maybe you’ve never owned one and don’t know if a jeep will be reliable enough for you? Well, the jeep brand has changed a lot over the years, and are now owned by FCA (fiat chrysler automobiles). In the past, they have been known for their excellent engines such as the 4.0L. Although their engines are still pretty good, they don’t compare to how legendary they once were. Many people are wondering how the reliability has been since fiat took over, and fiat doesn’t have a good history with creating reliable vehicles.

In this short guide, we’re going to look at the grand cherokee, cherokee, and wrangler. Further down the article, we will discuss the reliability on older jeeps including some of my own. Most of you reading this article are interested in buying a new jeep so we’ll cover those first.

WK2 grand cherokee reliability

After poking around on forums and speaking to a couple of grand cherokee owners we realized how horribly unreliable they are. According to consumer reports, the grand cherokee has extremely poor reliability. Even some fiat/chrysler technicians will openly admit almost all the cars that come in for work are grand cherokees. The most common problem for these new grand cherokees is the transmission basically going bad.

The most common problem for these new grand cherokees is the transmission basically going bad. Reports of rough shifting, jerking, hesitation and overall poor transmission performance are especially common on the 2015 models. Unfortunately, the cost to repair this issue is around $7,500 which is insanely expensive. Fortunately, it seems as though fiat/chrysler found this issue and it appears to no longer be present in current grand cherokee models.

There are plenty of other known issues for the grand cherokee, it would take far too long to dive into all of them. If you’re in the market for a WK2 grand cherokee I would strongly recommend visiting some forums to find out about other issues before you spend your hard earned money. Many grand cherokee owners are currently in “lemon” lawsuits to get their money back.

KL cherokee reliability

The standard cherokee seems to be more reliable than its bigger brother. However, it seems to also have transmission issues and just like the grand cherokee, the repair bill is insanely large. Supposedly most of the transmission issues are software related and have been somewhat fixed with software updates. Some users on forums and reddit claim to have their KL cherokee in the shop nearly every month. Besides the reliability, the base engine in the cherokee is pretty underpowered for what kind of vehicle it’s in. Most owners recommend getting some sort of extended warranty because more than likely, you’ll need it.

JK wrangler reliability

Interestingly enough reports on the JK wrangler show it to be fairly average in terms of reliability. I’m sure some of this is because of much simpler a wrangler is compared to a grand cherokee or cherokee. The transmission issue that has plagued other jeep models doesn’t seem to a present issue on the JK wrangler. The next generation JL wrangler is rumored to have the 9-speed ZF transmission that has been so problematic for so many owners. A lot of issues seem to arise when larger tires and an aftermarket lift are installed. Brakes wear out faster, as do suspension components and driveline components. Just like with the cherokee, many owners strongly recommend purchasing an extended warranty if the option is available.

What’s interesting is how well the JK wrangler holds its resale value. Even with “meh” reliability, the JK wrangler is still in demand. If you end up buying a JK wrangler and experience horrible reliability, you can also sell it for nearly as much as you paid for it.

Newer jeep reliability

The 3.6L and 3.8L pentastar engine found in relatively new jeeps are good little engines. But, from the information I’ve gathered on forums, the 3.6L is leaps and bounds better in both reliability and performance. Also in my experience as a lube technician, I have found that the 3.6L pentastar engine is pretty darn reliable. That engine comes in a massive variety of automobiles and they almost always seem to be running in tip-top shape regardless of mileage. The 3.8L jeeps, on the other hand, aren’t always running tip-top in comparison.

JD power associates

The 2013 wrangler has an overall dependability rating of 2/5, whilst the 2013 grand cherokee has a dependability rating of 3/5. Some reports vary on their rating, but for the most part, both of these vehicles are pretty far down the list of reliable vehicles.

The wrangler is slightly below average, but is it as bad as something like a land rover? Well yes actually, it is nearly as unreliable as a land rover according to J.D. Power’s dependability study. Jeep, dodge, ram, and chrysler are all in the top 10 least reliable vehicles in the US. Honestly when I saw that 2/5 rating for the wrangler I was fairly surprised. I have never heard anything bad about them personally. Maybe JK wrangler owners won’t admit they bought an unreliable $40k jeep?

So are they reliable?

The topic of reliability can become very complex very fast. Although modern jeeps have reports of horrible initial reliable, some owners report excellent reliability over long periods of time. Before you go off buying a jeep I would strongly recommend asking jeep owners if they would buy their jeep again given the opportunity. For the most part, people don’t want to complain about their expensive new car. No one wants to admit they made a poor financial decision. That’s why it’s important to ask people on forums and places like reddit where people will be honest about their experience.

How Reliable Is The COVID-19 Rapid Test? Experts Explain The Accuracy And Precision Of Results, are they reliable.

According to this chart, the jeep brand on average is 1 problem less per 100 cars than land rover. That’s surprisingly bad. Time will tell whether or not fiat will increase or decrease the brand’s reliability. But, I feel pretty confident when I say that fiat won’t screw up the jeep brand. So, if you were looking to buy a brand new jeep, don’t. As a jeep enthusiast and owner, it pains me to say this, but don’t buy a new jeep unless you are willing to deal with the unreliability.

Older jeep reliability

When I say “older” jeeps I’m talking late 80s and 90s. I could dive into the reliability of jeeps made before the 80s, but it’ll take up to much time. Plus, you should be mechanically inclined if you buy an old jeep. I’ve owned a couple of 90s jeeps and worked on countless XJ cherokees over the years.

Renix 4.0L

Jeeps in the 80s came with either a 2.5L 4-cylinder or a 4.0L renix inline-6. The renix 4.0L was a little iffy with its reliability. The main problem comes from the wiring harness and sensors. The renix is pretty hard to diagnose but is easy to repair if you know what the actual problem is. However, it was very reliable mechanically, but the poor electrical system ultimately held it back.

High output 4.0L

What awesome engine did jeep make it the 90s? The 4.0L H.O.! The updated version of the AMC 4.0L ditched the renix components in favor of new components. This new rendition of the 4.0L was known as the high output. The high output had a much tidier wiring harness and was much easier to diagnose than the previous renix 4.0L. The AMC 4.0L was one of four engines that continued to be produced after chrysler purchased AMC in 1987.

The jeep 4.0L H.O. Has been praised by countless automotive journalists for its insane reliability. It could have a rod knock and still get you all the way home. It could be running 90* under the proper operating temperature, with vacuum leaks, a bad fuel injector, and still get you home (ask me how I know).

Seriously, jeeps equipped with the 4.0L H.O. Will do 300,000 miles easy. My last one was at 215k miles, and I took it wheeling nearly every weekend, and it kept chugging along just fine!

My personal jeeps reliability

Like I mentioned above, I take my current jeep wheeling all the time, as well as drive it every single day. It has only left me stranded once, and that was from me going to hard off-road. There have been times where I needed to drive it upwards of 200 miles in one day and it was perfectly up to the task. Pretty good for a vehicle that only cost $1,000.

I have owned a total of 13 vehicles, which includes a few motorcycles. Out of those 13 vehicles, most of them broke something major. Ninja 250 engine exploded, SC400 engine exploded, suburban transmission exploded, land rover engine exploded, you get my point. Why am I telling you this?

Because the two jeeps I’ve ever owned are the only vehicles that have lasted over a year without exploding. My first vehicle was a 93 cherokee, and my last vehicle was a 92 cherokee. Literally, everything else I ever owned had some sort of detrimental issue that forced me to get rid of it. Of course, my current vehicle is super reliable, but that’s because it has 25k miles and a warranty.

My $1,000 jeeps seemed to take literally everything I could throw at them. From daily driving to road trips, to light pre-running, to trail riding. The current owner of my last jeep takes it out wheeling almost every weekend and it’s been super reliable for him too.

Summary

Overall if you’re looking at buying a brand new jeep, it might be better to look at alternatives such as the toyota 4runner. Some new jeeps are extremely reliable and some are extremely unreliable. I would especially stay away from the cherokee and grand cherokee due to their transmission issues. The JK wrangler doesn’t seem to be affected by those transmission issues, but it still has a “meh” reliability rating. Drop a comment below letting me know how your experience with your jeep has been!

Buying a new appliance is an investment, but consumers shouldn’t choose a refrigerator or washing machine based on the price tag alone.

On thursday, consumer reports released a ranking of appliance brands based on their reliability. The study evaluated different appliance-makers based on information the organization collected from members on more than 381,000 kitchen and laundry appliances purchased between 2008 and 2018.

“ speed queen, a company that exclusively manufactures clothes washers and dryers came was no. 1 in consumer reports’ ranking. ”

Speed queen, a company that exclusively manufactures clothes washers and dryers, was no. 1 in the ranking.

To rank the brands, consumer reports asked members how often the appliance broke or stopped working adequately. It looked at eight different types of appliances: refrigerators, dishwashers, ranges, cooking tops, wall ovens, over-the-range microwaves, washers and dryers.

Consumers rated reliability as more important than price or performance in determining which appliance they purchased, said eric hagerman, home editor at consumer reports.

“the stakes are high for major appliances,” he said. “these are really expensive products that you buy for your home. They’re things you have to have installed and they basically become a part of your home.”

whirlpool
maytag

frigidaire

samsung

As for brands that produce appliances across all eight product categories, LG 066570, -4.05% came out on top, followed by bosch, general electric US:HRELF and kenmore SHLDQ, +0.40% .

Meanwhile, brands that ranked in the bottom half of the pack included kitchenaid WHR, +1.62% , samsung SSNLF, and electrolux ELUXF, -3.25% .

“ roughly 40% of all refrigerators had problems crop up in the first five years after they were purchased, as did 30% of washers and 25% of ranges. ”

Notably, viking MIDD, -0.37% , which sells expensive, chef-grade appliances, came in last on the consumer reports ranking. A viking gas range can cost upwards of $15,000.

“the reliability rating doesn’t have anything to do with the price they charge or the marketing campaign,” hagerman said.

Viking president kevin brown defended the brand’s products in an email to marketwatch. “we are confident in the quality of today’s viking products,” brown said. “since middleby’s purchase of viking in 2013, viking has completely re-engineered the entire viking product line and has implemented 100% testing to ensure the best reliability, quality and customer satisfaction.”

A spokeswoman for GE appliances said the company had not yet seen the results of the study and could not yet offer comment. Marketwatch contacted the other companies for comment, but has not yet received any response.

A spokeswoman for jennair said, “jennair is committed to exceptional performance, masterful execution and provocative design; reliability and owner satisfaction are at the core of everything we do.” customers who have problems with the brand’s appliances are encouraged to call the company (1-800-JENNAIR) where “dedicated specialists will connect them to the troubleshooting they need or set an appointment for timely white-glove service,” she said.

A miele spokesman said the company was “pleased” with its no. 2 ranking. “miele is the only manufacturer in our branch of industry to test products such as our washing machines, tumble dryers, dishwashers and ovens to the equivalent up to 20 years’ use,” said spokesman kevin pchola.

The rankings are predictions based on previous customer experiences, meaning there are some happy electrolux customers and disappointed speed queen buyers out there.

Moreover, some appliances are more prone to breaking down. Roughly 40% of all refrigerators had problems crop up in the first five years after they were purchased, as did 30% of washers and 25% of ranges.

And while maintenance won’t necessarily double the life span of an appliance, it can improve its working condition and prevent major calamities from arising. Keeping appliances clean, inspecting their different parts regularly and treating them with care (don’t slam the microwave door, for instance) can go a long way in keep them in fine condition.

Mercury verado, are they reliable?

SMELIKFIS

Cadet

I am looking at buying a used CC in the 32-34' range.
2004 or newer.
My current boat is a 2003 grady with twin yamaha F-225 four strokes.
These yamaha's have been so good to me that in looking for a new to me boat, I have only been looking at boats with four stroke yamaha's.
I have found many boats out there with verdao's and now need an education on them.

What are common problems?
Are there better years to consider/stay away from?
How consistent are they?
Any help ?
Thanks, randy

Re: mercury verado, are they reliable?

Heavy, heavy, heavy! Did I mention they are heavy?? Your engines weigh about 583 each. Total = 1166#. A 225 verado weighs about 660#. Two of them = 1320#. That's like carrying one extra person around -- all the time. Since you are very happy with the yammys why wouldn't you stick with them. Certainly no harm in investigating options but on a boat, extra weight is not a selling feature.

Re: mercury verado, are they reliable?

"are there better years to consider/stay away from?"

Mercury motors no longer have model years, so you can't really discover a particular model by its model year. A mercury VERADO motor is just a VERADO motor as far as mercury is concerned, and they don't have model years. Mercury says that elimination of model years is a "consumer benefit." they explain how the benefit is provided in a special website:

Notwithstanding the premise that there are no model years, mercury has made significant changes to the VERADO motor during its production. While their literature about the motor does not mention this, the designation "gen II" (as in second generation) is in common use among consumers to help differentiate between the two models. The only way to recognize the gen II motors is by a difference in the decorations used on the cowling. The designator "gen II" does not appear, but the cowling decorations changed to a have more chrome or silver-metallic appearance.

There are substantial mechanical differences between the original VERADO and the VERADO that everyone (except mercury) calls the "gen II." you cannot update the older motors to have the new features because they involve changes in the engine block.

In an interview with boattest.Com published in july of 2007, mark D. Schwabero, then the president of mercury outboards, said that the improvements included:

--precision machined oil dams in the crankcase. By greatly reducing the clearance between the crankshaft and the ?Oil scrapers?, the amount of oil mass that the crankshaft had to push through and swirl around was also reduced, thus releasing more usable horsepower.

--eccentric grooved crankshaft main bearings. This slight change, too, reduced the amount of oil ?Sloshing? Around in the crankcase--and thus robbing power.

There is also a video in which a similar presentation is made by steve miller, verado platform manager of mercury marine. Mr. Miller explains that the fundamental basis for the improved performance of the verado was the simple reduction of friction in the engine itself. The power saved from those losses goes right to the propeller shaft output.

The net effect of these changes was to make the so-called gen II motor have better fuel efficiency.

"what are common problems?"

A common problem with the mercury VERADO is a failure of the fuel vapor separator due to low tolerance to gasoline diluted with ethanol. During development of the VERADO most of the testing was probably done with pure gasoline. Now that everyone in north america is using ethanol-gasoline fuels, there have been many reports of failure of the fuel vapor separator, presumably caused by the ethanol, and mercury has a designed a replacement part that is able to tolerate gasoline-ethanol blends better than the original. Replacement of the fuel vapor separator, or fuel supply module (FSM), has been provided by mercury in some cases as a warranty repair, and I don't think the owner has had to pay for it. I would certainly look into the condition of the FSM on any VERADO, particularly since it is almost impossible to avoid gasoline-ethanol fuels these days.

I notice that you're located in SE michigan, as am I. The list of mercury dealers in SE michigan who are certified to install the VERADO is extremely short. I think there is only one dealer in our area who can actually sell and install a VERADO. There are more dealers selling new boats that have been rigged at the factory with a VERADO.

To work on a VERADO the dealer must invest in special diagnostic tools and send his staff for training on the motor. While there are many mercury dealers, the percentage of them which have become qualified to provide VERADO service is still relatively small. I recommend you investigate the qualification of your local mercury dealer to make sure their service department is trained and certified on the VERADO and can provide service.

You want a reliable washer and would probably trade features for durability. Most top load washer have not changed in design since our grandparents bought theirs 60 years ago.

In this article, you will learn about the most reliable top load washers and our repair methodology.

What you will read is based on actual service calls, not predictive analysis or surveys. In other words, these are real problems.

The most reliable top load washer brands for 2020 are:

  1. Amana

  2. LG

  3. Whirlpool

  4. Maytag

The reliability blogs

We do not make numbers up as it suits us. Then again, why would it ever suit us to sell an unreliable brand?

Repair is now the biggest single department at yale by far. Have a look at just our techs, not including customer service agents, and warehouse parts personnel.

How Reliable Is The COVID-19 Rapid Test? Experts Explain The Accuracy And Precision Of Results, are they reliable.

On an average day, we will have 1.5 service calls to 1 delivery.

How Reliable Is The COVID-19 Rapid Test? Experts Explain The Accuracy And Precision Of Results, are they reliable.

Most appliance stores, however, do not have a single technician yet have a book of 1-800 numbers to call for your issues.

These articles always upset manufacturers, upset competitors, upset people, and even upset salespeople.

This is a typical comment on this blog:

"yea sorry. I simply do not believe you on this. Speed queen is the only washer dryer I could find without a motherboard. That in itself makes this the best you can buy in terms of life and reliability. I'm sure they have had some issues with some models(you mention a front load model), but to not acknowledge speed queen and their lack of a motherboard as MAJOR factor in reliability and overall life is suspect at best. The best way to build trust is to be truthful. Just sayin'"

The only way to be truthful in the appliance business is to repair your own issues and appliances. If you don’t and most don’t, then reliability doesn’t matter (by the way the motherboard is not the problem on this machine).

Most reliable top load washers for 2020

The most reliable top load washers are based on top load units serviced divided by units sold in 2019. The average rate of repair for top load washers is 18.58%. In 2018 it was 13.47%, so there is an increase.

Service qty shipped qty service ratio
amana 0 109 0.00%
LG electronics 1 28 3.57%
whirlpool 15 253 5.93%
maytag 44 204 21.57%
speed queen 83 178 46.63%
grand total 146 786 18.58%

How we calculate appliance reliability

In 2017 alone, we logged 30,761 service calls. In 2018, we logged 34,687 service calls. In 2019, the number was 35,256.

We now have 30 service techs performing 8-10 service calls 5 days a week. We record the service calls and divide by sales for a percentage within the first year.

Service is free for the consumer in the first year, so the data is more accurate. In theory, more people will be calling us for free service.

The numbers are not scrubbed. Anytime we send a service van, it becomes a service call.

What you need to know before buying a top load washer

Front load vs. Top load washers

How Reliable Is The COVID-19 Rapid Test? Experts Explain The Accuracy And Precision Of Results, are they reliable.

The most reliable washers sold are the simple whirlpool machines (whether they are named amana or whirlpool).

They haven't changed in quite some time. However, the 2nd, 3rd, and 4th most reliable washing machines are all front load machines from whirlpool, LG, and samsung in that order.

Service qty shipped qty service ratio
whirlpool 20 350 5.71%
GE appliances 1 15 6.67%
LG electronics 161 2270 7.09%
samsung 27 349 7.74%
maytag 251 659 38.09%
electrolux 13 13 100.00%
grand total 473 3656 12.94%

For the first time since we started writing our reliability posts, front load washers are more dependable at 12.94% vs 18.58% for top load washers.

You probably think it is the other way around.

Top load washers are generally cheaper to buy, as well as less expensive to fix than front load washers.

Front-load washers are much larger and use less water, electricity, and detergent than a top load. The spin speed is also 3 times faster so the clothes require less drying time.

Although front load washers are more expensive, the payback is 2-3 years due to greater capacity and efficiency.

Why is speed queen reliability so low?

Speed queen is the most repair-prone top load washers sold with a repair rate of 46.63% up substantially from 2018 and 2017.

According to our service manager, the data suggests issues with a defective hose problem. This has been corrected.

Other issues include leveling (when we do not install it). Also, speed queen top load washers have agitators and are not as gentle on clothes as agitator less front load washers.

Should you buy a speed queen washer?

The problems are relatively minor. Speed queen did fix the hose issue this year, so going forward, the washer should be far better.

You also do have a 3 to 7-year full warranty depending on the machine, so you will be covered and not pay for service.

Top load washers are far simpler to repair as well than front load washers. However, you will have problems finding a tech in certain areas (like almost everything else).

Final thoughts

You are probably reading this because of a bad experience with another machine.

Statistically, the simple whirlpool is the most reliable, but front loaders, especially for families, are still the best overall machines with bigger sizes and better efficiency.

If you are looking for reliability, look at whirlpool in top and front load, as well as samsung and LG in a front load washer.

Frequently asked questions:

Do top load washers clean better?

No, they use more water and an agitator, but do not clean better than the front load washers.

Which is better, a top load or front load washer?

Front load washers are much bigger with better cycles and lower water and energy consumption compared to top load washers.

Who makes the best washing machine?

LG, whirlpool, maytag (a division of whirlpool), and samsung make the best washing machines.

Which top load washer is best?

The simple whirlpool washer is statistically the most reliable top load washing machine.

How long do washers last?

Top load washers will last 6-10 years on the average.

Most reliable appliances series:

Editor's note: this article is updated yearly with data from our internal service department.

WHY SHOULD YOU TRUST US?

A few review sites have placed this at the bottom of their articles. So here is our take: our mission is to find reliable products for you to buy. Other review sites may say this as well.

However, we don’t love every product. Quite frankly, it costs us way too much money in repair costs to support less reliable brands.

In fact, we sell fewer brands than most appliance stores. Here is why:

We feel it is our responsibility to repair your appliances after you buy them.

We now have 30 service technicians, each averaging 8-10 calls a day monday through friday, plus another 110 on saturday. That's over 30,000 service calls logged in one year.

The labor rates of fixing an appliance do not come close to the true cost in any product’s warranty period.

That is why no major retailer has a service department. It costs too much labor, money and time.

Our blog is a bit different than most others you will read. We cannot write glowing reviews of unreliable products.

Hopefully, the bloggers and organizations who write such glowing product reviews for every brand consider servicing these products first. Only then they will understand the consequences of their marketing.

My goal has always been simple: I want yale to be the best retail experience anywhere. I have tried to create a compelling environment for customers and employees alike.
